The first week of construction has been and gone with some good progress made…..we are away! First, the large footings for the steel columns to bear the weight of the first floor were dug and were quite significant due to the poor soil quality. The columns were concreted in place & once set, the steel beams craned into place, after which the new first floor joists were erected and the sheet flooring fixed, giving the platform for the new storey. The first of the external walls were also erected, drastically changing the appearance of the house already. Unfortunately, due to a few unforeseen factors, the steel beam that was to be a feature of the front facade is required to be boxed in, which is a shame, however the overall effect of the facade will still be impressive and a drastic improvement from the original. The aluminium windows were also ordered this week and the cabinet makers have made a start on the joinery, including the kitchen.
